Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you're struggling with your mental or physical health, facing difficult life transitions, or simply want to grow and understand yourself better, therapy can help. Our free consultation is a no-pressure way to explore whether we're a good fit. Important Safety Note: If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or active self-harm, our outpatient services may not be right for you at this stage of your wellness journey. In these situations, the best next step is to first recieve acute psychiatric services (https://988lifeline.org or dial 988; emergency clinic, intensive outpatient).
How long does therapy take?
It varies by person and goals. Some people see improvements in 12-16 sessions every 6 months, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll work with you to create a plan that makes sense for your situation and budget.
Can I do therapy online?
Yes! We offer secure telehealth sessions, allowing you to attend therapy from the convenience of your own home. We determine the best format for your care on a case-by-case basis. In some situations, we may decide that in-person sessions are the most suitable option.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, as psychologists we do not prescribe medication. However, we work collaboratively with psychiatrists and primary care physicians when medication may be helpful as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Understanding Different Therapy Approaches
What's the difference between CBT, ACT, and MBCT?
These are cognitive and mindfulness-based approaches that work with thoughts and awareness:
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors through structured techniques and homework.
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) emphasizes accepting difficult emotions rather than fighting them, while committing to actions aligned with your values.
- MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) combines mindfulness meditation practices with cognitive therapy, specifically designed to prevent depression and anxiety relapse.
What's the difference between EMDR, IFS, and Cognitive Processing Therapy?
These are trauma-focused therapies that help process difficult experiences:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds) to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional intensity.
- IFS (Internal Family Systems) views your psyche as containing different "parts" with distinct perspectives and needs. Therapy helps these parts work together harmoniously, especially healing parts carrying trauma or pain.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) helps you examine and modify unhelpful beliefs related to traumatic events, particularly effective for PTSD and trauma recovery.
What's the difference between MSC, MBCT, and MBSR?
These are evidence-based mindfulness programs, each with a specific focus:
- MSC (Mindful Self-Compassion) teaches you to treat yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a good friend, especially during difficult times. Focuses on building self-compassion skills through meditation and exercises.
- MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) combines mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy techniques, specifically designed to prevent depression and anxiety relapse by changing your relationship with negative thoughts.
- MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) is an 8-week program teaching mindfulness meditation and body awareness to manage stress, chronic pain, and improve overall well-being.
